WAAPA Young Artists Ensemble 2023 & 2024

In both May 2023 and 2024, I participated in the Young Artists Ensemble program, which involved six weekly rehearsals exploring selected jazz repertoire and concluded with a performance at the Spiegeltent.

The ensemble brought together Year 10–12 students from across Perth to perform jazz standards such as Body and Soul, Cheek to Cheek, Skylark, and many more. It was an exciting chance to connect with fellow young musicians and play in an advanced setting, especially as working with new players brings fresh energy, and an array of opportunities to engage with the music in unexpected ways.

Rehearsals were held over six weeks at WAAPA, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., under the direction of Nick Abbey. As a mentor, he was incredibly supportive, offering thoughtful stylistic guidance and encouraging us to experiment and push our creative boundaries. Working with him always felt inspiring and elevated the entire ensemble experience.

The final performances were held at the end of May marked a strong finish to the program — with many notable figures from Perth’s jazz community in attendance, Tom O’Halloran, Chris Tarr, Jamie Oehlers, Chris Foster to name a few.

Being part of the Young Artists Ensemble gave me invaluable ensemble experience that I now carry with me as a jazz piano student at WAAPA. It also helped me find my footing in the local jazz scene and form lasting connections with other passionate musicians.
